The basics

What is VIDTREO?

VIDTREO is video recording infrastructure for web apps. One SDK captures camera or screen video in your users' browser, encodes it on their device up to 4K, stores it on our edge network with zero egress fees and sends you an AI transcript by webhook. You add recording to your product without building or running any video servers.

Who is VIDTREO for?

Developers and product teams whose users need to record video inside a web app: async video interviews and hiring, education and LMS assignments, telehealth intake, customer support bug reports, product reviews and testimonials, and legal or compliance recordings.

How do I get started?

Create a free account, create an environment and copy its API key, then install the SDK from npm and drop the recorder component into your app. Most teams record their first video in minutes, and the $1 free credit lets you test with real recordings before you pay anything.

Do I need my own servers or video pipeline?

No. Encoding happens in the browser, and upload, storage and transcription run on VIDTREO. The only server-side piece you may want is an HTTPS endpoint that receives a webhook when a recording or transcript is ready.

Recorder & SDKs

Which frameworks are supported?

React, Vue, Nuxt, Web Components and vanilla JavaScript. React gets a ready-made component and hooks, the Web Component works in any stack, and the headless core SDK gives you full control if you want to build your own interface. Everything ships with TypeScript types.

Which browsers and devices work?

Chrome, Edge, Opera and Safari on desktop, plus Safari on iOS and Chrome on Android, with nothing to install. On phones the recorder picks the right mode for the device: a fullscreen overlay, an inline embed or a handoff to the native camera app, which is the most reliable option on iOS Safari.

Can users record their screen as well as their camera?

Yes. Users can record the camera, the screen or both, and switch sources in the middle of a recording with one click.

What quality and file format do I get?

Anything from SD (480p) to 4K (2160p): you choose the resolution, and it sets the per-minute price. Video is encoded to MP4 in the user's browser, so the file is ready to play as soon as it lands, with no server-side transcoding.

What happens if the connection drops during an upload?

The upload queue is saved in the browser and survives lost connections and page reloads, so the recording isn't lost when the network fails. Every file is also checked for integrity before upload, so a broken recording never reaches you silently.

What if a user blocks the camera or microphone?

The recorder checks permissions before asking and requests the camera and microphone one at a time. If access is blocked, it shows step-by-step instructions to turn it back on in that browser instead of a dead-end error. Users can also pick their devices and watch an audio meter before they start.

Can I customize the recorder and limit recording length?

Yes. Restyle it with CSS theming, replace every text and tune more than 30 options, including resolution, a maximum duration and a minimum duration that stops accidental half-second clips. For a completely custom interface, use the React hooks or the headless core SDK. The whole recorder weighs under 40 KB.

AI transcription

How does AI transcription work?

Turn it on per environment with one toggle in the dashboard. When a recording finishes, VIDTREO extracts the audio, detects the language and transcribes it automatically: no extra API call, no polling and no separate transcription vendor. It is included in the per-minute price.

Which languages can it transcribe?

The spoken language is detected automatically, so there is nothing to configure. Users can record in English, Spanish, Portuguese and many other languages, and each transcript reports the language it detected.

What formats does the transcript come in?

Three: WebVTT captions you can add straight to a video player for accessibility, word-level JSON with start and end times for search, jump-to-moment interfaces or your own AI models, and plain text for indexing, summaries and archives.

How do I receive the transcript?

A signed transcriptions.transcription.completed webhook delivers the detected language, word count and duration, the metadata you attached at upload (such as a candidate or course ID) and links to the three files. The links expire after 5 minutes for security, and you can request fresh ones from the API at any time.

What is VIDTREO Intelligence?

An upcoming product that turns each video into structured results based on criteria you describe, such as scoring an interview answer or flagging a compliance issue. Every finding links to the moment in the video that proves it, and it abstains instead of inventing an answer. It is in early access.

Security, privacy & storage

Who can see my users' videos?

Only your application. Videos live in private storage with no public access: to play one, your app requests a signed URL that expires within minutes, so a link that leaks into a log or a chat is dead before anyone can misuse it. Each environment also has its own storage and API keys, so a staging key can never read production videos.

Are videos encrypted?

Yes. Data is encrypted in transit with TLS 1.3 and at rest with AES-256. If you connect your own storage, your bucket credentials are encrypted before they reach our database and are never logged or returned by the API.

Can I store videos in my own bucket?

Yes, on every plan and with zero markup. Connect your own Cloudflare R2 bucket or any S3-compatible storage (AWS S3, MinIO, Backblaze) per environment, and recordings go straight there. You control retention, region, backups and access logs. Google Cloud Storage and Azure support are on the way.

Who owns the videos?

You do. You keep all rights to your content, and VIDTREO only stores, processes and delivers it to provide the service. With your own bucket the files never leave infrastructure you control, so there is nothing to migrate if you ever leave.

How long are videos kept?

Until you delete them or close your account; after an account is closed, its videos are deleted within 30 days. The free tier's 500 MB of storage keeps recordings for 30 days.

Where is data processed, and what about GDPR?

Our primary infrastructure is in the United States, with delivery through a global edge network. Transfers from the EEA and the UK rely on Standard Contractual Clauses, and our privacy policy covers GDPR and CCPA rights. If recordings must stay in a specific region, connect your own bucket there.

Pricing & billing

How does pricing work?

You pay only for the minutes your users record, at a price set by resolution: $0.008 (SD), $0.010 (HD), $0.012 (Full HD) or $0.015 (4K) per minute. Capture, encoding, storage, delivery and AI transcription are all included, with no monthly fee, no minimums and no egress charges.

What does the free tier include?

Every new account gets $1 of free credit, about 100 HD minutes, plus 500 MB of storage, quality up to 4K and AI transcription. The credit doesn't expire, and you don't need a credit card to sign up.

How am I billed?

Usage is added up each month and invoiced on the 1st, with payment due within 15 days. Prices are in US dollars and exclude applicable taxes, and payments are processed by Stripe.

Is there a contract or monthly minimum?

No. There is no subscription, no minimum spend and no commitment, and you can close your account from the dashboard at any time.

We record a lot of video. Can we get a better price?

Yes. Volume discounts apply automatically as your monthly minutes grow, and we offer custom pricing above 500K minutes a month. Tell us your volume and we'll reply within 24 hours.

Use cases & comparisons

Can VIDTREO help stop deepfake or fake candidates?

It makes them much harder to pull off. Recordings are captured live in the browser, and before upload the recorder checks frame density, duration and audio-video sync. Combined with time-boxed questions that must be answered on the spot, an async recording is far harder to fake than a live video call.

Does VIDTREO work with Moodle or other LMSs?

Yes. Our free, open-source plugin for Moodle 4.4+ adds video recording to assignments: students record in the browser, teachers grade inline and no video file touches the Moodle server. Integrations for Canvas, Google Classroom, Blackboard and WordPress LMSs are planned, and the SDK works anywhere a browser runs.

How does VIDTREO compare to Ziggeo and Addpipe?

All three record video in the browser, but VIDTREO encodes it on the user's device instead of on servers and has no mandatory monthly plan. HD costs $0.010 per minute versus $0.0265 on Ziggeo and $0.05 on Addpipe, and 4K costs $0.015 per minute versus $0.15 on Addpipe.

What about Mux or Cloudinary?

They solve a different problem. Mux encodes and delivers video and Cloudinary manages media assets, but neither records video in your users' browser. VIDTREO covers the whole capture flow, from recording and encoding to storage and AI transcription, in one SDK and one price.
